Private Robert Smith was born in Texas. He attended school to the fist grade. He was a “section” hand before enlisting in the U.S. Army. While incarcerated Private Smith matriculated to the fifth grade at the prison school. In 1924 the Assistant Secretary of War recommended that Private Smith’s sentence be reduced to thirty years.
