Private Edie Maxwell was born in South Carolina in 1890. He was raised by his brother-in-law. He quite school at the age of fifteen in the fourth grade. He worked as a house-person, butler, and laborer. Private Maxwell enlisted in the U.S. Army in June 1916. Private Maxwell was sentenced to fifteen years at Hard Labor. He was granted parole in 1923.
