Private James E. Woodruff was born in Virginia in 1897. He quit school at the age of seventeen years in the eighth grade. He worked as a laborer. He enlisted in April 1917. He was sentenced to Life Imprisonment at Hard Labor. His sentence was later reduced to nineteen years and six months. He was granted parole in 1924.
